A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, November 7th, 2018

Question of the Week: If people are made in the image of God, what are angels made in the image of?
Verses: Genesis 1:26-27, Daniel 10:10-14, Revelation 1:12-18

Human beings reflect the image of God personally; He is a moral, emotional, and relational being. So likewise we reflect His personal nature in a way that is absolutely unique to us.
Angelic beings reflect the glory of God. How His majesty is described is also seen to a lesser degree in the angels. When Gabriel appeared to Daniel, he very much resembled the way Jesus was described to John when He was glorified. How do we know the difference? They both clarified who they were. John was given the explanation that who He was talking to was none other than the Lord Himself. When Daniel saw a similar figure, the individual clarified who he was and that he was an angel who needed help from Michael after a demonic entity kept him from getting the message he was sent to deliver to him. Obviously Jesus isn’t going to have trouble with demons, so why are their descriptions so similar? The angels reflect God’s glory just like we reflect His personality.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, October 9th, 2018

Question of the Week: What does the Bible mean when it calls Jesus “The Last Adam?”
Verses: Romans 5:12-21
The First Adam is literally Adam. The first man whose actions affected all of mankind’s relationship with God in a negative way.

The Last Adam is Jesus. The man whose actions affected all of mankind’s relationship with God in a positive way.
This system may at first seem unfair, since the actions of one man could condemn us all. However, upon hindsight Paul points out that it was the only system that could save us all at once through one act. If one man’s actions could condemn us, then one man’s actions could also redeem us. God wasn’t setting us up to fail. He put a system in place that was the only way that could potentially see us all succeed.

Question of the Week: Does Sheol still exist?
Verses: Luke 16:19-31, Ephesians 4:8
Sheol is the Hebrew word referring to the place of the dead. Before Jesus’ sacrifice, no one could enter Heaven until their sins had been paid for. When anyone died, they all went to the same place. The question is what state they were in while in this place. According to Jesus, someone we’d consider knowledgeable on the afterlife, there were those who stood at Abraham’s side in a state of comfort and those who were in torment awaiting their final judgment. What made you stand on one side or another was if you lived your life looking forward to God’s promise of mercy or not. When Jesus’ sacrifice was complete, those who trusted in His promise before His first coming were released from Sheol and taken personally by Jesus to Heaven during the 3 days He spent in the grave. Those who refused salvation in the Old Testament era remain there. And likewise, those who reject a personal relationship with Jesus today go to this place to await judgment as well. Hell will not be open for business until a time in the future known as The Great White Throne Judgment in Revelation 20. Those who die having refused God’s mercy go to Sheol today. Those who have received God’s mercy are immediately in Heaven with Him. Sheol still exists, but it’s only for those awaiting final judgment today.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, September 13th, 2018

Question of the Week: How to we know the Gospels are reliable history?
Verses: 1 John 1:1-3, 2 Peter 1:16, 1 Corinthians 15:3-8

There are three things we need to look for when judging ancient history.
1. Early Testimony: The earlier the artifact or writing we have to the original event, the more reason we have to trust it as accurate. When it comes to things older than 1000 years old, centuries after the fact are still generally accepted as long as at least two different sources say the same thing.
2. Eyewitness Testimony: The best accounts in ancient history come from people who were there. This includes the accounts giving details that only people at this time would know first hand. Example: Describing the Temple of God in detail shows it was written before 70AD when it was destroyed.
3. Hostile Testimony: People who wouldn’t want something to be true, (either enemies or indifferent towards the event), admitting it took place gives another layer to the reliability of the historical event.

With this all in mind, understand the biographies of Jesus Christ include overwhelming evidence of all 3. The Gospels were all written within the lifetimes of the authors who saw the events take place. The individuals who wrote the gospel were the eyewitnesses themselves, or in Luke’s case directly interviewed them. And people who didn’t even believe Jesus was the Messiah like James and Saul converted to Christianity after His resurrection.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, August 24th, 2018

Question of the Week: Why did Abraham choose circumcision as a sign of his calling by God?
Verses: Romans 4:9-12

When Abraham was first promised more children than stars by God, he believed His promise and that alone saved his soul. Circumcision, the cutting away of the foreskin of the male genitals, was a gesture made by Abraham that dedicated the part of himself that made children as no longer for his pleasure, but God’s purposes. He didn’t have to, but chose to as a sign of where his heart was at. This would go on later to be a religious sign of everyone who was living proof of that promise being true. It has become less meaningful and more medical in modern days, but Abraham’s motives were simply to use a cultural sign of physical dedication to something as a reflection of the fact that his heart trusted God’s promises. It didn’t save him, but was how he culturally put feet to his faith.
