Biblical Basis For Our Policies

There are individual responsibilities to help the needy, and then there are Church responsibilities in helping the poor and needy. In this policy we are discussing the Church's responsibility.

Our Benevolence Policy at CCF is based on the teachings found in the Bible

1st Timothy 5:3-16

[3] Honor widows who are really widows. [4] But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good and acceptable before God [5] Now she who is really a widow, and left alone, trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day. [6] But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives. [7] And these things command, that they may be blameless. [8] But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. [9] Do not let a widow under sixty years old be taken into the number, and not unless she has been the wife of one man, [10] well reported for good works: if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work. [11] But refuse the younger widows; for when they have begun to grow wanton against Christ, they desire to marry, [12] having condemnation because they have cast off their first faith. [13] And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not. [14] Therefore I desire that the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house, give no opportunity to the adversary to speak reproachfully. [15] For some have already turned aside after Satan. [16] If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows.

1) The Church is not to assist everyone financially.

2) The Church is to help widows (those that are alone) that have no one else that can help.

3) Younger widows are able to remarry instead of having the Church support them.

4) Younger people are to use their family as the first source of help.

5) Those seeking benevolence must do everything to reconcile with family before receiving any financial help from the Church.

6) This passage also teaches us that those eligible are to be serving in the body of Christ.

7) This passage states that the Church should be the last and final resort. The Church should not be burdened, only if all other avenues have been exhausted.

2nd Thessalonians 3:10-11

[10] If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. [11] For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies.

In light of this passage (those that are not widows and alone), we will need to know if you have been working or moving in the proper direction of finding work to be eligible for benevolence from CCF.

In light of the passages mentioned in the "Basis For Our Policies", we have arrived at the following criteria to receive benevolence from CCF.

Benevolence request take two full weeks to be processed.

1) The person or family must be a regular attendee and giver in this fellowship.

2) You must have attended CCF for six months to receive benevolence.

3) Circumstances that may qualify a person or family for benevolence include: loss of job due to illness or layoff, inability to provide basic needs (caused by excessive debt or an irregular income).

4) Prior to receiving assistance, the person or family must discuss their financial situation with a counselor in the fellowship to determine their need and receive and apply instruction in family budgeting as neccesary.

5) Repayment of the benevolence is encouraged so others in need may be helped.

6) A person or family asking for benevolence must already have pursued other avenues of financial remedy. i.e. bank or other financial institutions, as well as their extended family. If they are receiving assistance from others in the fellowship individually, benevolence will be denied.

7) The standard policy is to give benevolence on a one time basis. However, extenuating circumstances will be prayerfully considered.

8) Under no circumstances are you to ask those attending CCF for money. You will be warned and then potentially asked to leave the fellowship.

Please indicate that you have read and understand our benevolence policies.*

What can you expect?

To help those working through financial difficulties, we require all those eligible for benevolence to meet with a Biblical Financial Counselor for accountability and discipleship, working through Biblically based workbooks or other materials.
Are you open to meeting with a Biblical Financial Counselor?*
You must be open to disclose all bills and financial information to your counselor. Any dishonesty will result in being ineligible for benevolence.

Family Questions:

Have you visited with your family on your financial needs?*
Who can we call in your family to discuss your situation?*

Financial Institution Questions:

The Church is not a bank for short term or long term loans. Those seeking payment for rent, mortgage or miscellaneous bills, need to make arrangements with their financial institutions. If they are unable to do so, they are required to explain why to the Benevolence Counselor. The counselor will determine if the Biblical criteria for Church help is met.
Have you met with your local financial institution?*
Who did you talk to?*

Scheduling Information:

We ask that all potential benevolence recipients meet with a Pastor. Based on this meeting it might be recommended or required for you to continue a bi-weekly or weekly meeting with the Pastor for Biblical instruction.
What days are you available to meet?*
Times will be dictated by the availability of the pastor/financial counselor. Note that Monday is the staff day off.

The Fact Sheet About Biblical Counseling For You

These are the facts about Biblical Counseling that is offered through Calvary Christian Fellowship. This information will help you to understand what you can expect, what to expect and not to expect and also what will be necessary from you.

1. Biblical counseling is a ministry of our church. As such, those who receive counseling need to be regular attenders and supporters of the church ministry. All counselors are under the supervision of church leaders. Our counseling ministry is not a business nor is it a profit-oriented activity.

2. Counseling from the Bible can address a wide range of problems, including: pride, lust, anger, worry, fear, depression, anxiety, alcohol and drug abuse, marriage issues, parent-child relationships and problems that result in personal and interpersonal tension, turmoil and distress.

3. The Biblical counselors are trained in the use of the Scriptures and the principles and practices of Biblical Counseling. They are committed to the belief that the Scriptures provide the only authoritative rule of faith and standard of conduct for living. They do not base their counseling knowledge on their own opinions, experience, or concepts of behavior. They are not trained psychotherapists or licensed professional counselors, nor do they practice psychological therapy.

4. Confidentiality is respected. What occurs during counseling may be discussed with other counselors or the leadership of the church, but only to the degree necessary to find further Biblical solutions to the problems presented and/or for training purposes. All such consultation will be conducted in accord with the highest standards of Biblical ethics.

5. Biblical counselors believe in your total health needs. Your counselor may recommend that you have a full or specified medical examination.

6. Your counselor will use all of their ability, relying on the Holy Spirit of God in applying Biblical principles to help you in whatever problem deprives you of the peace and joy that God promises in His Word. Your counselor will concentrate on three basic principles from God's word:

A: Hope – We have hope in Jesus Christ, our great High Priest who was tempted in all things, yet without sin. Even though every sin common to man may be tempting you, God has promised that He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear, but will provide for you a way of escape so that you will be able to endure it. — I Corinthians 10:13, Hebrews 4:14-16

B: Change – In Christ we can learn how to lay aside the old selfish ways of living and put on the new ways of living in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. — Ephesians 4:20-24, Colossians 1:10

C: Homework – We need to prove ourselves, lest we be merely hearers of the Word, forgetting and deluding ourselves. For only in becoming effectual doers of the Word shall we be blessed in what we do. — James 1:22-25

7. Normally, counseling sessions will last about one to one-and-a-half hours each week, and may continue for eight to ten weeks. If you respond more quickly to Biblical admonition, the counseling sessions may last no more than four or five weeks. However, if the counselor does not observe definite change in the first few weeks, he or she will seek to identify the cause of this lack of change, discuss it with you, and help you to correct it.

8. Appointments are to be made with the counselors directly or with the church secretary. Your counselor will be your contact person for any questions or matters requiring immediate or emergency help between sessions. Most questions or matters should be written down and brought to the next counseling session for further discussion. If you are unable to come to a counseling session, please notify your counselor or the secretary at least 24 hours in advance of the session whenever possible.

9. We don't allow for switching of counselors. Once you've started with someone, they will be your main counselor for the duration of your sessions and any future sessions. We also find it prudent to have men counsel men and women counsel women. For women, we allow for one meeting with one of the pastoral staff, after which you will be recommended to one of our female staff members.

10. You will need to bring with you to each session: your Bible, your notebook, an open heart and mind and any questions that have come into your mind since the last session. It is beneficial to write your questions down so that they will not be forgotten. Come with high expectations in the Lord Jesus to work in your life. You will find hope and encouragement even on your first visit, if you are open to it. From then on, with your cooperation, we believe you will find a good and acceptable answer to the difficulty that prompted you to contact us.
