A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, Feburary 17th, 2017

Question of the Week: What was Jesus talking about in the Parable of the Unjust Steward?
Verses: Luke 16:1-13
The parables are a series of stories Jesus told to specific people to illustrate a point He was trying to make. When the intended audience and overall conclusion to the story are understood, the parable is seen in the light it was meant to be. The audience Jesus was speaking this parable to were a group of Pharisees, who valued their appearances before men so highly that they completely lost sight of how God saw them. The overall message of the parable was that the steward was smart to invest in relationships he would soon need to depend on instead of the current relationship with his boss that he would inevitably lose. This life and how men see you last only as long as your physical body does. Jesus is telling the Pharisees that death is their pink slip. They should spend less time building up themselves on Earth where they won’t stay for much longer, and focus on building up themselves before God.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, Feburary 10th, 2017

Question of the Week: What are the differences between the Rapture, the Second Coming of Christ, and the day the current Universe melts away with a great noise and fervent heat?
Verses: Revelation 4:1, 6-20, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, 1 Corinthians 15:50-55, Daniel 7:1-27, Daniel 9:24-27, 2 Peter 3:10-13

The chronology of the End Times is as follows.
1. God will call His saints to His presence in the Rapture.
2. The Antichrist will rise on the world scene bringing a 7 year peace treaty to the world.
3. The Two Witnesses will lead the 144,000, and by extension, more people on the planet to salvation than any other time in history.
4. The Antichrist will kill these witnesses after 3 1/2 years of them miraculously defending themselves from attack and preventing it from raining during this time period. Then he will desecrate the Temple of God by demanding worship as God from the Holy of Holies. Anyone who refuses will be murdered.
5. God’s wrath will be poured out on the earth during this entire time period escalating worse and worse until the entire planet’s ecosystem is on the verge of collapse.
6. The Antichrist will lead the armies of the Earth to war against the Lamb who will return with the Church, the Tribulation Martyrs, and Old Testament saints to destroy his army at the Valley of Megiddo. He will then restore and rule this world for 1000 years.
7. Satan will be bound until the end of this thousand year reign, and lead a final rebellion against God that will end in an instant. Then He will judge him, and all of those who have rejected a personal relationship with Him, past, present, and future. This is when all things will be made new and the old Universe will pass away.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, Feburary 3rd, 2017

Question of the Week: What are the purpose of the genealogies in Jewish culture?
Verses: Matthew 1:1-17, Genesis 5:1-32

Genealogies, or records of family history, were recorded and regarded very highly in Israel from the time of Moses all the way to the Destruction of Herod’s temple in 70AD. The purpose they served was two-fold. Their immediate purpose was a resume. In order to qualify for certain jobs like the priesthood, you would be required to prove your relation to the tribe of Levi. The long-term purpose would prove who Israel’s Messiah would be. Jesus’ claim to be Messiah needed to be backed by a proven relation to the following people. He would need to be a descendant of Abraham to fulfill the promise made to his bloodline by God. He would need to be a descendant of Jacob in order to be Jewish. And most importantly, He would need to be a descendant of David in order to inherit the throne of Israel. This is the reason why Jesus’ genealogies were recorded in the gospels.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, January 27th, 2017

Question of the Week: What does the Bible mean when it calls something unclean?
Verses: Leviticus 15:25-27

There are two words for unclean in the Hebrew language. The first refers to a moral uncleanness that implies an uncleanness before God. This is known as guilt that mars someone after committing adultery or murder. The second refers to bodily uncleanness that simply requires a bodily cleansing and a time of separation in God’s law from public places. This is what’s being referred to when someone in considered ceremonially unclean after childbirth, a monthly cycle, or coming in contact with a dead body. It’s not referring to sin in any way.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, January 20th, 2017

Question of the Week: What did Jesus mean when He said that we would do greater works than He did?
Verses: John 14:12
Jesus was speaking to His disciples the very night He would be arrested about the work He would continue through them even though He was physically absent from them. This continued work of the Holy Spirit in their lives would allow God to work through the disciples for the same purpose He worked through Jesus during His time on Earth, to show people the character of God and their need for salvation. Since in the very sentence Jesus specifies why God will work through them instead of Him, the question is what Jesus meant by “greater.” Of all the things Jesus accomplished in this world, these three stand out as the most significant. He lived the perfect life, demonstrated His authority over all creation as God, and resurrected Himself from the dead to provide a means of salvation for all mankind. Obviously the disciples wouldn’t do greater things than this in terms of substance, so by process of elimination the other way “greater” is commonly used makes the most sense. Jesus didn’t tell His disciples they would do greater works than Him in substance, but because He was only here for 3 years, the quantity of things God would do through them would be greater than the things He had time to do Himself.
