A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, December 15th, 2017

Question of the Week: What are some of the Old Testament Prophecies that talk about Jesus’ first and second comings?
Verses: Isaiah 2:4, 7:14, 9:6, Micah 5:2, Jeremiah 23:5-6, Psalm 22, Zechariah 9:9, Daniel 9:24-26

While we have more evidence than we know what to do with about Jesus’ first coming historically, the Old Testament prophets went to even greater lengths to describe it in detail before it even happened. Over 100 prophecies were fulfilled by Jesus in His first coming; including where He’d be born, how He’d die, what date in history and on what kind of animal He’d enter the city of Jerusalem on, and especially His status as God Himself. Three times that number remain unfulfilled until Jesus’ second coming, but we know since Jesus kept the promises He fulfilled in His first coming, the promises we have yet to see fulfilled are guaranteed.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, December 1st, 2017

Question of the Week: Was Jesus born on December 25th?
Verses: Luke 2:1-7

The short answer is that we don’t know. The long answer is that we’re asking the wrong question. How do we know Jesus was born at all? In order to know something happened, we need three things. 1. It needs to have happened. 2. We need people to have seen it. And 3. We need to know we can trust those people who saw it. We know that the accounts of Jesus’ birth in Luke and Matthew had direct contact with not only the Roman sources that told us who was Emperor of Rome, who was in charge of their region of the Empire, and the event of the Census that took place during His birth, but also the person most directly involved in Jesus birth. That of course being His mother. If you question her sincerity, then we have the lists of not only Jesus’ supporters, but even enemies of Christianity like Tacitus who acknowledged Jesus died historically. It’s hard to die if you’ve never been born. For these reasons and others, we know that Jesus was born. That’s the most important thing to understand. When we celebrate it is a secondary issue.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, November 17th, 2017

Question of the Week: Would scientists tampering with our DNA be dishonoring to God?
Verses: Psalm 139:14

Ever since the fall of man, genetic disorders have been taking place along with the more common infectious diseases. The majority of work that modern science has done are merely using it as a tool to combat the results of the fall. Since it’s obviously not something God is in favor of, it is not an unbiblical practice to combat disease. That’s all that the recently announced CRISPR is intended to do. It’s being used as a tool to treat deeper results of the fall in our genetic code by dealing with disorders that occur there like cancer and Alzheimer’s. As long as the scientists developing this method of treatment make the treatment consensual, and its purpose remains to treat disease and no further, then there’s no reason to be concerned with it. Much like the Stem Cell controversy that occurred in the past, the real issue is the potential for abuse before the actual tool is even complete. This system of gene-editing is working on a masterpiece of God’s design that modern scientists continue to be baffled by. It will be quite some time before they are even capable of treating our DNA, let alone abusing that tool.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, October 10th, 2017

Question of the Week: Was the Bible originally divided into chapters and verses?
Verses: 2 Timothy 3:16

The short answer is no. The long answer is that the introduction of chapters and verses were introduced at later dates for the purpose of assistance in personal bible study. Finding a passage by looking through scripture one book at a time would be a time-consuming task, so chapter divisions were introduced by Stephen Langton in 1227AD. The first bible to use his chapter divisions was the Wycliff English Bible published in 1382. Later on, these chapters were also narrowed down to verses in 1448 by Rabbi Nathan to assist those who were studying the Old Testament. This was applied to the New Testament in 1555 by a man named Robert Estienne. These chapter divisions are not divinely inspired nor ever claimed to be. They were simply introduced as tools to assist those who wanted to dig deeper into God’s word.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, September 29th, 2017

Question of the Week: What is the doctrine of immanency?
Verses: Matthew 24:44

The End Times have been an area of scripture under attack since the moment they were written down. People have claimed the Rapture would happen on a certain date in the first century, and will continue to claim it in the 21st century. What can we do to make sure we aren’t swept up with every wind and wave of false doctrine that predictably flows through the church? Remember the doctrine of immanency. Jesus said that His coming would take place at an hour we would not expect. Therefore the Christian life isn’t one looking for what hour to expect Him, but living in light of the reality that we could be taken home by the Lord at any moment.
