A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, October 21st, 2018

Question of the Week: If Jesus was perfect, why have Christians throughout history done evil things in His name?
Verses: 1 Corinthians 11:1
When Christians do evil things, we have the opportunity to remember the most important part of Christianity and why we believe it. We don’t follow Christians. We follow Christ. If fallen people do fallen things, it doesn’t change anything about who Jesus is and what He has done for us in history.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, October 9th, 2018

Question of the Week: What does the Bible mean when it calls Jesus “The Last Adam?”
Verses: Romans 5:12-21
The First Adam is literally Adam. The first man whose actions affected all of mankind’s relationship with God in a negative way.

The Last Adam is Jesus. The man whose actions affected all of mankind’s relationship with God in a positive way.
This system may at first seem unfair, since the actions of one man could condemn us all. However, upon hindsight Paul points out that it was the only system that could save us all at once through one act. If one man’s actions could condemn us, then one man’s actions could also redeem us. God wasn’t setting us up to fail. He put a system in place that was the only way that could potentially see us all succeed.

Question of the Week: What do I have to do in order to be saved?
Verses: Romans 10:9-10, John 6:28-29
The Bible outlines the basic essentials of what makes someone saved. 1. A mental acknowledgement of who Jesus of Nazareth is, The Lord and the Savior of our sins because of what He did on the cross. And 2. A verbal acknowledgment that He has Risen from the Dead to confirm those two facts. That’s all that’s expected of you biblically to become a Christian. Behaving like a Christian comes after this, not before.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, September 28th, 2018

Question of the Week: Does Sheol still exist?
Verses: Luke 16:19-31, Ephesians 4:8
Sheol is the Hebrew word referring to the place of the dead. Before Jesus’ sacrifice, no one could enter Heaven until their sins had been paid for. When anyone died, they all went to the same place. The question is what state they were in while in this place. According to Jesus, someone we’d consider knowledgeable on the afterlife, there were those who stood at Abraham’s side in a state of comfort and those who were in torment awaiting their final judgment. What made you stand on one side or another was if you lived your life looking forward to God’s promise of mercy or not. When Jesus’ sacrifice was complete, those who trusted in His promise before His first coming were released from Sheol and taken personally by Jesus to Heaven during the 3 days He spent in the grave. Those who refused salvation in the Old Testament era remain there. And likewise, those who reject a personal relationship with Jesus today go to this place to await judgment as well. Hell will not be open for business until a time in the future known as The Great White Throne Judgment in Revelation 20. Those who die having refused God’s mercy go to Sheol today. Those who have received God’s mercy are immediately in Heaven with Him. Sheol still exists, but it’s only for those awaiting final judgment today.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, September 21st, 2018

Question of the Week: Are there such things as Satanic symbols or objects Christians should avoid?
Verses: 1 Corinthians 8:4-13
Shapes aren’t Satanic. A shape is only a collection of lines and curves. Pentagrams and other things have been associated with pagan worship over the years, but they only have the impact on you that you give to them. If there are things like statues of Lucifer or ancient tools used for pagan sacrifices, the concern a Christian should have isn’t for the “demons” hiding in them. Their only concern is how others who don’t know Jesus would react seeing those sort of things in your possession. The problem isn’t in the object. The only thing that makes something Satanic is the message it conveys. If something points people away from God, it shouldn’t be something a Christian owns. Not for the sake of their salvation, but their witness and the conscience of those around them.
