A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, November 10th, 2017

Question of the Week: How do I know what God’s will is for my life?
Verses: 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8, 1 Timothy 2:3-4, Jeremiah 29:11-12

Our problem isn’t that we need more spiritual IQ. We need more spiritual I do. God has made His will for our lives clear in His written word. If you want to do what God wants you to do, you’re 99% of the way there. The rest is given to us in writing.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, November 3rd, 2017

Question of the Week: What do I do when I feel distant from God?
Verses: 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, Deuteronomy 31:6

Our relationship with God is not based on feelings. We can enjoy God’s presence with our emotions, and there’s always times we feel closer to God than others. However, we are on dangerous ground spiritually if we base our relationship with God on how we feel. The reality is that God is with us. God knows what we need when we need it. God won’t leave us or forsake us. God died for us when we wanted nothing to do with Him. Now that we have Him, He’s not going anywhere. Our emotions may say otherwise at times, but our reality doesn’t change.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, October 27th, 2017

Question of the Week: Why shouldn’t Christians have sex before marriage?
Verses: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, Ephesians 5:28-29

Trust is the foundation of a happy sex life. The world doesn’t know any better nor should it be expected to. However, those who call themselves Christians are saying they believe God’s purpose and intended design for our lives is the right one. This extends into even the practice of our sexuality. Marriage is always prescribed first because it is a lifelong commitment to someone. It’s that promise made before God that will build the trust that won’t cause someone to doubt the commitment of their spouse. That is where real intimacy occurs. Without that promise, there’s no long-term reason to trust each other. If you want an awesome sex life, start with how it’s inventor intended it to be practiced. Not just in marriage, but in a commitment to someone who before God you have sworn to protect, to serve, and to love just like Christ has done for all of us.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, October 20th, 2017

Question of the Week: What do Christians need to remember when they feel depressed?
Verses: Psalm 103, 1 Peter 5:7, Matthew 6:25-34

God cares about you. There are no more significant words in all of the universe than its creator personally investing Himself in the lives of little old you and me. If you take the time to remember that God’s word is filled with these kinds of reminders, you will begin to pick up on the fact that God knows how we feel sometimes. The key then isn’t to default to our feelings, but remember our reality in spite of them. Whether it’s the Old Testament, the Gospels, or the letters of His Disciples, we are given reminder after reminder that God knows how we feel and is always there to see us through them. The key to benefiting from that knowledge is to know it in the first place. Know how much God cares and how He has proven it throughout history. That way no matter how you feel, you’ll know the reality of God’s heart towards you hasn’t changed.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, August 18th, 2017

Question of the Week: Does Hebrews 6:4-12 teach that Christians who fall back into sin have lost their salvation?
Verses: Hebrews 6:4-12, 1 John 1:8-10

The Book of Hebrews was written to three different kinds of people. Those who received the gospel, those who rejected it, and those who were holding off a decision about it until later. This context is key just like it would be in understanding any passage in scripture. How do we know who this passage is speaking to? Read the entire statement. Verse 9 of Hebrews 6 clarifies for us that this is not the case of those who have received the gift of eternal life, but had only tasted it. This lack of commitment while still resorting to good works on the side is shaming the cross and useless for salvation if it never results in a personal relationship with God. Likewise, If one sin after salvation results in its loss, salvation is useless to humanity since the Bible affirms that denying we sin even after receiving salvation is calling God a liar. If sin disqualifies you from salvation, no one is going to Heaven. That’s why our actions have nothing to do with it. It’s all because of God’s mercy and goodness that we have security in our relationship with Him.
