Question of the Week: Did Jesus command us to hate our fathers and mothers in order to follow Him?
Verses: Luke 14:25-33

Context is key. Jesus was speaking to His disciples about all they had left behind in order for them to follow Him. When the disciples made Jesus a greater priority than their homes and jobs, they hated their jobs and homes out of preference to Him. It wasn’t that they hated their jobs in a passionate sense, but out of priority, considered Jesus more important. That is when Jesus made the statement that those who follow Him need to consider Him a greater priority than even their earthly families. There would come a time in history where many would be forced to choose between one or the other.

Question of the Week: What does it means when you want to know more about God but don’t have a personal relationship with Him yet?
Verses: John 6:44, Romans 10:9-10

The God of the Bible is a God who desires a relationship with His creation. He doesn’t depend on us for anything He wouldn’t already have within Himself, but even despite all He knew He would have to go through to save us from our own choices, created us to enjoy Him anyway. Until we fulfill that purpose, we will find ourselves constantly missing the one thing we desire most. God uses this to draw us to Himself. The Bible says that we are born in a state of spiritual death, but God spoke life back into us and gave us the offer of a relationship with Him again. This is supernatural intervention on His part. A soul that hears the voice of God even in death is being given the opportunity to listen and receive that which will restore life to them again forever. However, this is not something that God will continually offer. If you hear the voice of God calling you and have that desire to want to seek Him, do not ignore it. Too much is at stake to gamble with eternity. If you want to know God, know that is His voice calling you to Him. Know that anyone who answers that call by accepting the gift of His Son’s life for their redemption will be saved.

Question of the Week: What is the difference between answered prayer and circumstances sorting themselves out coincidentally?
Verses: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, James 1:5-8

From a worldly perspective, it can be difficult to tell the difference between between coincidence and providence. Prayer in the life of a believer is what helps bridge that gap. When you look at things from this world’s perspective, life happens and it doesn’t seem like anything else would have happened but what actually occured. When a believer prays, it not only opens up direct communication with God, but allows you to see your circumstances from His perspective as you give them to Him. That’s why an earthly perspective can only tell you so much about what’s actually going on behind the scenes. Prayer reminds us of God’s involvement in our lives and is what allows us to think beyond what we see. If we are always in prayer about our circumstances, we’ll find ourselves more and more looking up and knowing that God had a very special hand in seeing things “work themselves” out. That’s why we are always to be in prayer and in everything give thanks. We don’t take a single moment for granted knowing not only how much God has involved Himself in our lives in history, but continues to do so today.

Question of the Week: Is Remarriage Adultery?
Verses: Matthew 5:32, Matthew 19:8

There is a lot of confusion over the passage that claims that if a man divorces his wife and she marries another man, he causes her to commit adultery. Many well meaning Christians then take the leap to assume this means God is against re-marriage as much as He’s against divorce. While the latter is a true statement, the former is not. God hates divorce because it ruins the image He created marriage to express, as well as the obvious damage it does to the individuals involved in the process. When Jesus made the statement about a man causing his wife to commit adultery, it was speaking to a culture that played so fast and loose with the divorce process that it came down to two schools of thought. A rabbi named Hallel held the view on divorce that you could legally divorce your wife for any reason whatsoever. While another rabbi named Shamai took the unpopular opinion that Jesus validated as truth that divorce was only legal under the condition of adultery or physical abuse. Jesus was speaking to a culture who didn’t divorce for legitimate reasons in the eyes of God when He said those words. Marriage is a ministry that is to be taken seriously. Therefore if it is abandoned at the first sign of trouble instead of empowered, endured, and enjoyed by the grace of God, Jesus address to them what that they were missing the point as to why divorce was even permitted in the first place. If under extreme circumstances, you passed beyond the point of all help and had to resort to divorce, you are not sinning in the eyes of God and as free to marry and have a marriage that honors Him as you did when you were single. The point was to understand that marriage is a covenant not taken lightly in the eyes of God, and shouldn’t be abused or abandoned because of the smallest inconvenience.

Question of the Week: Is Lent taught in the Bible?
Verses: Colossians 2:20-23
The short answer is no. The long answer is noooo. Lent uses biblical practices like prayer and fasting to prepare for the holiday of Easter. While this seems outwardly noble, you will not find a single mention of a mandatory fast or regular abandoning of a certain vice on a particular day. Fasting is a voluntary time where you dedicate your time and attention to prayer instead of something else. An example of this is Daniel, who ate during a fast, but fasted of certain foods to focus his attention on God. In the same way, when the book of Acts records the people of Ephesus burning their belongings purchased from pagan shrines, it wasn’t because it was a certain day where they needed to biblically do so. They wanted to pursue God and chose of their own volition to destroy the things in their lives that stood between them and God. These things were a demonstration of a heart that desired God, not ones that submitted to tradition. According to scripture, outward actions without first a changed heart accomplishes nothing. If you want to prepare your heart to worship God, do so as He’s called you, Not your calendar.
