Question of the Week: What is Hell and why is it so miserable?
Verses: James 1:17, Revelation 20:15

Hell is described many different ways. It’s been called the Lake of Fire, Outer Darkness, the Second Death, and Gehenna. However, all of these allusions are just describing things and places you wouldn’t want to be apart of. Hell by definition is this; an eternal existence separated from God. God is the source of every good thing. So following the implications of that reality, separation from Him includes separation from everything that comes from Him. What makes drowning torture is the absence of oxygen. What makes starving torture is the absence of food. What makes Hell comparable to things like eternal fire, darkness, and death is because the source of peace, light, and life is not there. Jesus has restored our relationship with God to make sure that won’t happen. It is an existence we were never created for. God has given you the option. His advice is to choose life.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, January 6th, 2017

Question of the Week: Why is God sad about the things that occur in history if He knew they were going to happen?
Verses: Genesis 6:6, Matthew 23:37-39
God is omniscient, which means He knows everything. Our perspective is finite. We don’t know the future and hardly remember everything about our past. This makes it difficult to understand God’s responses to certain things since we can’t understand what an omniscient perspective would be like. We can, however, understand a perspective of love. God doesn’t want to see His creation hurt, but won’t violate their free will committing the actions that He already knows they’ll make. Our cynical perspective assumes that because God knows the choices we’ll make, He won’t be hurt by them since they weren’t a surprise to Him. However, scripture makes it very clear that though God knows the all horrible things that will happen in history, it doesn’t change how much He cares for us. That’s why His heart is broken when He sees His creation suffer. He won’t stop loving us no matter what we do. In the same way, that’s why God doesn’t love us any less even though He knows all of the sins we’ll ever commit. God’s omniscience doesn’t cancel out His love, it demonstrates it as unconditional.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, December 23rd, 2016

Question of the Week: Where is the United States in Bible Prophecy?
Verses: 2 Peter 3:9

The United States is conspicuous by its absence in Bible Prophecy. We are given a remarkable amount of detail concerning the roles that nations like Russia, China, and especially Israel will play in the last days. However, no mention of the United States can be found concerning the nations that will play major roles during this time in history. There are three possible reasons for this. The first is that we will fall out of the role of a superpower like England and France before us due to the financial strain of bearing such a title. The second reason the United States does not play a major role in Bible Prophecy is because we may be taken out of the world scene through a cataclysm or war before the Tribulation gets into full swing. The third and most hopeful reason is that one last revival brakes out before the time of the Rapture in the US, and so many are taken before the Tribulation begins that the resulting blow to our economy ends up being one we never walk away from. Conservative estimates number the amount of evangelical Christians in the US in the millions. Could you imagine the financial strain put on this nation with that many people vanishing without a trace off the face of the earth? The 9/11 terrorist attacks cost the lives of almost 3,000 people and it took almost a decade for our nation to recover. Pray that this is the scenario that puts us out of the world scene, because there’s no better way for a nation to end their story then collapsing as a result of the work God has done in it.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, December 16th, 2016

Question of the Week: Does anybody really know what day Jesus was born on? If not, why do we celebrate Christmas on December 25th?
Verses: Romans 14:4-6, Luke 3:1-2

The easiest answer to this question is that we just don’t know. The amount of historical evidence given to us by Doctor Luke in his gospel account give us an extremely clear picture of the year as well as the reality that it happened. We know it was when Caesar Augustus was Emperor since His reign and census accounts are well documented during the years 27BC to 14AD. We know Qurinius was governor of Syria from 51 BC to 21 AD with a few breaks in between. And as well, we know that the other historical figures beyond Jesus’ birth are also established and verifiable historical figures. Pilate was appointed the Consul of Judea by Tiberius Caesar (14AD-37AD) from 26AD to 36AD and the High Priest Annas was replaced by his son in law Ciaphas in 14AD. All of this side information ultimately brings us back to the event being a historical one. While we don’t have the exact day and many have taken it upon themselves to present their own opinions on the matter, we need to understand some very important things. First, Jesus isn’t so sensitive that He’ll be upset if we celebrate on the wrong day. What matters to him is that we’re celebrating it, more than when we’re celebrating it. Second, Our choice culturally to celebrate it on December 25th is as valid a guess as any other. When people choose to celebrate Christmas, there are just as wide a variety of ways people choose to celebrate Christmas as well. Not all of them are Christian, but this doesn’t invalidate the purpose of the holiday. We choose to take this day to honor and remember the fact that God gave us a gift and we honor that gift by doing the same to those we love around us. And Third, understand that it doesn’t matter what day we chose to honor God. Every day is an opportunity to honor God and thank Him for the gift of eternal life through His Son. It’s not a matter of getting the right day that makes Christmas Christmas. It’s that we honor it the right way. That’s what matters.

A Reason for Hope Question of the Week, December 8th, 2016

Question of the Week: Is having a Christmas Tree in your home the same as setting up a pagan shrine?
Verses: Jeremiah 17:2, Romans 14:1-13

The short answer is no. The long answer is “nooooooo.” Historically, the idea of Christmas being a pagan ritual is sketchy at best. There have always been pagan festivals for any and every kind of occasion and there’s very little evidence to suggest that the Christian adoption of these holidays ultimately corrupts their purpose. The Bible says that we can use days as special opportunities to give thanks to God for the things He’s done for us. The Bible also says we can observe every day as an opportunity to do so as well. The issue is not what we’re doing, but their ultimate purpose. There are those who celebrate Christmas for very carnal and selfish reasons, but the fact that others abuse the day doesn’t defile it eternally before God. People have made cases that because you kneel under the tree to retrieve presents, that you’re bowing down to it. Some even turn to the Bible and say because Jeremiah references a tree as a place where Israel would set up pagan shrines for the worship of idols, that this is where the idea of Christmas trees came from and therefore Christmas is idolatry. This information is false since the premise of those pagan shrines under trees were for practical reasons like shade rather than any symbolic significance to the tree itself. Likewise, kneeling before a tree doesn’t mean you’re bowing to it anymore than kneeling next to your car to change a tire is treating it like an idol as well. We need to understand that taking a day to remember the birth of our Savior is not a pagan ritual because others have used it for illicit purposes. We can’t help what the world does with good things. We ourselves can decide to use that day as an opportunity to remind our friends, family, and loved ones that a very special gift was given to us and it’s worth celebrating. Or we can choose to keep to ourselves and honor God in our own ways on that day. We are not honoring God, however, if we use our time to attack other Christians for doing things we ourselves don’t do for the same reasons. Understand what you’re doing and why, and make honoring God during Christmas the goal. In fact, that can be something we do everyday! It’s our choice to decide how we treat a modern holiday. Make sure those choices focus on God’s goodness and not on groundless claims that others are sinning because they don’t do things the way you do.
